If you weren’t planted in front of your television on Friday night (c’mon, who isn’t?), you probably missed the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica on SciFi at 9.

Wait, what?

Yes, it’s true. Battlestar Galactica is one of the best shows around, and I urge you to start watching immediately. It’s not standard science fiction fare, but a gritty human drama that happens to contain some of the best political commentary yet attempted by the entertainment industry. Season three finds humanity coping with an unwanted occupying force of Cylons, secretly operating an insurgency and fighting back with suicide bombings and sabotage. Sound familiar? The remarkable thing about the episode was that the audience was asked to empathize with the insurgents, something that Americans have not had to do. Important characters are swept up the middle of the night, tortured, and detained without charges or evidence, not seemingly faceless foreigners halfway around the world like we see on the news.

I swear, it really is bold and thought provoking stuff. Watch it!
