The University of Michigan and the US Department of Justice have reached a settlement related to the number of handicapped seats to be added to Michigan Stadium.
Due to it’s age, Michigan Stadium was previously exempt from the Americans With Disabilities Act mandating specific standards to ensure the accommodation of disabled persons. With the massive renovation project, however, this exemption expired, leading to different interpretations of compliance by different individuals. Under the settlement, the 88 seats currently designated for the disabled will increase to 329 by 2010. Additional seats will also be available in the luxury suites.
