The Boston Globe has investigated a Clinton claim that I’ve never really thought to question: her role in passing the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). So she wasn’t a legislator, and as such could not have backed up her claim with her voting record. All we do know is that Senators Kennedy and Hatch say she played no part in drafting legislation and that her husband opposed it.
Okay, so she’s not the first person to embellish their accomplishments, but she does position herself very well to hide behind the closed doors of the White House and use hindsight to selectively choose what she supported and did not support at the time, regardless of her original feelings on the matter. Hyperbolic stories of a dangerous mission to Kosovo with Sinbad and Sheryl Crow and negotiating with Macedonia over refugees that were already allowed into their country only serve to frame her as a person that will say and do anything to get elected. I know Clinton will stand up for universal health care and the reproductive rights of women, but do I believe she would sell out on issues such as allowing gays to openly serve in the military, a cap and trade system for carbon emissions, or comprehensive immigration reform for political expediency? Yes.
This is a deep issue of substance that Obama for one should hammer hard on, that you know what he will fight for when he becomes President, and that with Hillary, you don’t.
