The latest images released from the Hubble Space Telescope show an exciting early stage of a supernova. To give you an idea of the rarity of such an image, the spiral galaxy shown, NGC 2397, is the result of a ten-year search for a supernova precursor star. From the study, it appears that stars with masses as low as seven times the mass of the Sun can explode as supernovae.
